From Conditional Green Card to Citizenship

Background

A marriage green card client married to a U.S. citizen started with a 2-year conditional green card, went through removal of conditions and a naturalization interview, and finally took the oath as a U.S. citizen.

Challenges

Every step has a firm deadline. The I-751 must be filed within 90 days before the conditional green card expires, and the spouse of a citizen can apply for naturalization only after holding a green card for 3 years.

Strategy

We planned ahead for each milestone. After the I-751 was filed, the expired green card plus the receipt notice provided an automatic 48-month extension. After the naturalization interview was passed, we pressed directly for the green card.

Outcome

The full path from conditional green card to 10-year green card to citizenship was completed within four years (marriage green card filed 2021 · I-751 filed 2023 · N-400 filed 11/2024 · naturalization interview passed 03/2025 · oath taken 04/2025).
